Sixteen. The year of the driver’s license, high school prom, SAT’s, lost virginity and your first job. Irresponsible, impossible, naïve, rebellious and misunderstood. However, for Corey Breit or better known as DJ Epic Twelve things have been a little different. Recently turned seventeen year old Epic Twelve has already figured out how to balance school, his own car payment, taxes, having a regimen work schedule at Power 106, regular club residencies in San Diego and Los Angeles and last but not least, the ladies. Not only is he on the map, but also he is moving closer to his final destination each day.

Epic Twelve

Walking in early to a club performance, you may initially spot Epic Twelve setting up and assume he is the opening act. Standing 6′ tall, custom Nike’s and clean cut, Epic Twelve is the teenager most parents would only dream of their daughters dating. He’s doing more than most college grads and has far surpassed many other industry DJ’s in the past four years. I could say that Epic Twelve is the best DJ in his age range- but that is only half of it. Comparing Epic to other DJ’s in his age range isn’t fair considering there are so few making any moves outside of Youtube.

It all began about five years ago; at age twelve that Corey attended a friends Bat Mitzvah. While most of his buddies were busy celebrating, the parties DJ kept Corey in a trance. A few months later, Corey attended a birthday party where the DJ let him take a whirl at scratching. The same year, with his parents support, Corey took his first course at the Los Angeles based Scratch Academy, the leader in DJ education and music production. On his own he continued his education after the one course by practicing daily. A year later, owner; DJ Hapa recognized Corey’s gift and started working him into gigs.

Epic jokes that at age thirteen, his mom bought him a horrible pair of turntables and mixers for Christmas. Since then Epic has moved up and has purchased his own equipment (Technics), which he believes, he will probably have forever. His solo career began at thirteen when he began spinning at 21+ clubs in the southern California area.

Tour and Bookings

Since then, to his portfolio, Epic twelve has added a joint tour with Cody Simpson and Greyson Chance, spinning at private events for Jordan and Tony Hawk, release parties for Sony’s newest teen pop sensation- Jasmine Villegas, shows with rapper Ice Cube and DJ Khaled and much more. Currently Epic Twelve is backed by an amazing management team, Sneakers and Bowties.

While age plays a huge part in Epic’s career, it is the challenges one faces that sets an individual apart from the rest. Being that he is still a teen, and under eighteen he not only faces a constant challenge of whether or not he will be able to work at over 21 club events, but also competition in his industry is at least five to ten years his senior.

The older an artist gets the more they believe their career is something they deserve. However, today it is quite the opposite. The industry has become over-saturated with talent, and the ones who make it to the top I am finding are the ones who expect the least and work the hardest. These people who solely expect, are the ones who are opening for the main performance, that being Epic Twelve. The wrath and contempt Epic may experience is just a small challenge he has already become accustomed to. Similar challenges are what set Epic apart from the robust world of DJ’s who seem to be born each and every day. With his age as a huge challenge in this environment, Epic Twelve has matured at a far quicker pace than other teenagers, forcing him to work twice as hard.

The Young and Talented

While Epic Twelve carries a heavy load, his talent is as clear as water, his ability to incorporate and mix a wide variety of different genres of music at one place is mind blowing. The best word to describe Epic would be aware. He pays extreme attention to details and is very focused. On New Years in San Diego, I took a moment to stand back and look around, observe the people dancing, understand the type of crowd at the event and of course the overall performance of Epic Twelve. What I saw was a teenager that was able to make every single person in the club happy. While his audience at this particular event was pretty widespread, there were those between the ages of 21 and 50, every ethnicity with all different ears for music. There is no better feeling than dancing with your friends and all of a sudden your all time favorite song from five years ago comes on. Epic Twelve is very aware of who his audience is, and in turn is able to deliver a mix of music that appeals to everyone.

16 year old Epic Twelve is certainly raising eyebrows with his DJ skills , and his mixes on the ones & two’s. Los Angeles, CA is his hometown , but he is definitely making his mark all over. He had a guest DJ spot on Power 106 recently, but he is mostly known for keeping the rave crowds rockin . He’s also set to do a five week tour with Cody Simpson & Greyson Chance next month. Before Epic Twelve leaves for his tour we got a chance to find out a bit more about him .

I see myself doing a lot of original production, a lot like a David Guetta, or DJ A-Trak. Working my way into radio music. I’ll also just be turning 21, so I might enjoy myself a little, haha.

Q/A Time

Q: When did you first begin to DJ, and why ?

A: I was 12 years old, so basically whenever I used to go to parties I would see Dj’s which always really interested me, one day I walked up to one of those DJ’s and asked him where I could learn and I thought his set up looked like a spaceship, which I thought was ill. I’ve been rocking with it since.

Q:Who are some of your favorite artist?
A:It’s hard to narrow it down! I’m in to all kinds of music, and I always have an open ear to everything new coming on the scene.

Q:What was it like to DJ on Power 106?
A:It was EPIC!!!!!

Q:What shows or events do you have coming up?
A:I’m actually going on tour with Cody Simpson and Greyson Chance starting April 9th! I’ll be going all across the U.S. for five weeks with them, I also have some shows coming up with just me in Denver, CO and Texas.

Q:Whats the most exciting thing that’s happen for you, or to you?
A:Signing my management deal with Skee.TV is definitely a highlight, and really every time I’m rocking a show or club is a great experience.

Q:Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: I see myself doing a lot of original production, a lot like a David Guetta, or DJ A-Trak. Working my way into radio music. I’ll also just be turning 21, so I might enjoy myself a little, haha.

Q:When did you DJ your first Rave , and how was the experience?
A:When I first started DJing I started doing a lot of house parties, from there I’ve DJ’d at some of the hottest clubs in Hollywood, “Kress Nightclub”, “Playhouse Nightclub” et cetera. I’m now trying to really get down on a lot of festivals.

Q:Where can we hear more of your mixes ?
A:You gotta go to my shows!! Also you can check with me here: Sound Cloud FaceBook Twitter EpicTwelve.com I’ll also have a store on there where you can get apparel and exclusive music!

Q:Any shotouts you want to give ?
A:Shout out to everyone that has helped me along the way, & HIPHOPSWAGGA.COM! I love you guys!

As Featured on SolRepublic

Epic Twelve might not be a household name yet, but the 16-year old DJ is quickly carving out his place in the music game. It all seems to be happening with Bieber-like speed too. DJing since the tender age of 12 (yes, pre teens), Corey Breit has already achieved more than most other kids his age—let alone all the up-and-coming DJs out there with stars in their eyes. It’s inspiring on many levels. He’s the youngest DJ to spin on the LA radio station Power 106. Currently in high school, Epic Twelve holds down a residency at the posh Hollywood nightclub Playhouse, entertained crowds at the legendary Key Club on Sunset strip, has played Chicago and New York and headlined at Side Bar in San Diego on New Years Eve. Most impressive, he spent two months last year bouncing around the US playing in front of thousands of people with rising pop stars Cody Simpson and Greyson Chance.

Where exactly Corey Breit will be five years down the Epic Twelve road remains to be seen, but with original productions in the works, an increasing DJ schedule and fan base, the future looks bright. To think it all started with a six-week boot camp style class at the LA based Scratch Academy.

My life is music. My passion is music. Not many things happen in my life that doesn’t revolve around music.

Q/A Time

Home Town: H-Woooood.

Currently Living: H-Wooood.

Origin Of Name: I’m going have to come up with a way cooler answer to this question. The real story is I started DJing at 12 (hence the Twelve in my name) and I’ve always thought the word “epic” was a great way to describe anything dope or exciting. So I put them together and have been Epic Twelve ever since.

E-Slug: Twitter.com/EpicTwelve.

Weapon Of Choice: I’ll leave that open for your interpretation.

Est. Miles Traveled Per Year: In the last two weeks I’ve done about 10 thousand miles. I’d say this year I’ll do roughly 100 thousand miles.

Gigs Played / Nights Out Per Year: 50-ish.

Source of Power: People who really inspire and influence me are artists with really distinct style. Guys like A-Trak, Steve Aoki, David Guetta… I have so much respect for these guys, they don’t follow anyone—they stand out.

Blurb Yourself: Music has been an integral part of my being for as far back as I can remember. Life without music would be colorless and unfulfilling. Sound motivates me, elevates me and drives my life forward in a positive way.

Can you walk us through your various musical phases? From early interest to actual creative output, how did they tie into your waking life?
When I was seven or eight my first introduction to hip-hop was NWA. I became a big fan of old school hip-hop and that built into a love for hip-hop. Listening to DJ Fashen mixtapes from four or five years ago really got me into electro house. Eric D-Lux also got me into house. So because of my love for both styles of music I’ve kind of adapted my fashion sense to both genres. I wear form-fitting clothes but also rock Jordans. I like to have a little mixture of each.

What life activities are made better when listening to music? Talk about the last time you enjoyed one and the other.
Working out. I have a hard time getting in the gym as much as I’d like, but a good song can give you that extra push. My go to workout song is “Stronger” by Kanye. Also, music while driving is a necessity.

If you visualize music as you listen, what (generally) do you imagine?
A party.

If you could send advice via a fortune cookie to up-and-comers, it would read:
Follow your vision and don’t let others sway you.

What is a song that inspired you to create?
The Skrillex remix of “Levels” by Avicii.

Tell me about your most memorable night out.
Probably my first gig I ever did—it was for a carnival. I didn’t get paid, but I was finally doing what I enjoy and I haven’t looked back since.

Tell us about a specific event or period in your life that is linked in your mind to an album.
Get Rich or Die Tryin’ by 50 Cent came out when I was young and solidified my love for hip-hop.

Are there any dots to connect with where/how you grew up to your musical output?
My family is very musically inclined; music was always playing around me growing up. My dad plays the drums. I think I got my musical talent from my dad and my passion for it from my mom.

How does listening to music figure into your creative process?
Listening to artists like Skrillex really inspire me while working on my own production. Skrillex basically started a whole new genre—he’s the man.

What value do you place on environment as a creative springboard?
I really like my studio setup to have dim lighting. I normally work in my home studio, but working in other studios—being in a different place—helps me a lot. Working from home can cramp my creativeness.

Talk about some of your “classic” memories of touring?
My first time being in Chicago was sick. I’m a big pizza fan and having original deep-dish pizza was awesome. The hotel was crazy too. Performing in New York City for the first time at 16-years old was crazy; I got stopped on Broadway by a fan while walking with my manager. It was really cool to see people from across the country know who I am.

What has changed in the realm of headphones since your first pair?
I first started my career with bootleg, horrible headphones. As my career has gone on I’ve gotten the newest and “best” headphones every year and now that I’m on the SOL REPUBLIC team I couldn’t be more proud. They are truly innovators in the field.

Born and raised in Hollywood, CA, Skee.TV/Skee Music DJ Epic Twelve has quickly stormed the music industry spinning for artists and celebrities like Cody Simpson, Jasmine Villegas, Greyson Chance, Michael Jordan, Tony Hawk and DJ Felli Fel. The sixteen-year-old
phenom is the youngest mixer to ever appear on radio powerhouse Power 106, as well as the youngest artist to win the Beezo Battle and have a residency at famed Playhouse Night Club in Hollywood.

Epic Twelve became interested in the craft after seeing DJs at parties and worked to perfect his skills, striving to be like his heroes DJ AM and A-Trak. He first connected with Scott “DJ Skee” Keeney, CEO of Skee.TV and Skee Music, through a mutual associate and landed a gig opening for the multi-hyphenate music mogul’s SKEETOX Live shows around California. After a series of successful performances, Skee took notice of the young DJs intense work ethic and desire to constantly improve, eventually signing him to Skee.TV/Skee Music.

DJ Skee founded Skee.TV, a unique production, marketing, and content distribution company specializing in creative visual productions and new media marketing, in 2007. Since then, the portal has launched successful campaigns for Fortune 500 companies and created some of the most viewed music and entertainment content on the web. Skee.TV has garnered over 200 million streams on its YouTube channel, and is ranked the #18 most watched YouTube channel of “all time”. Skee Music is the artist management division of the company specializing in nurturing the talent of DJs and musicians.

Since joining the Skee.TV/Skee Music team, Epic Twelve has reached incredible new heights in his career and his currently traveling the country as part of the “#Waiting4U Tour” with Cody Simpson and Greyson Chance. The gig has opened countless new doors for Epic, who has begun work on original production material and looks forward to appearing at bigger venues in the future, showcasing his music for the fans.
